In a world of shadows, anything is possible. Except escaping your fate.

Ever since she was a child, Ivy has been gripped by visions of strange realms just beyond her own. But when her sister goes missing, Ivy discovers the truth is far worse—her hallucinations are real, and her sister is trapped in a parallel realm. And the one person who believes her is the dangerously attractive guy who’s bound by an ancient legacy to betray her.

Adrian might have turned his back on those who raised him, but that doesn’t mean he can change his fate…no matter how strong a pull he feels toward Ivy. Together they search for the powerful relic that can save her sister, but Adrian knows what Ivy doesn’t: that every step brings Ivy closer to the truth about her own destiny, and a war that could doom the world. Sooner or later, it will be Ivy on one side and Adrian on the other. And nothing but ashes in between…

The Beautiful Ashes is the first in the Broken Destiny trilogy and Jeaniene Frost’s first New Adult novel. I have been a long-time reader of the Night Huntress series and all the spin offs that came from it, so when I heard Ms. Frost was starting a new series I had to give it a try.

My first impression was that I really enjoyed the story. This book has all the wonderful characters and world-building that any fan has come to expect. It’s a great take on the good vs. evil ultimate fight. Both Ivy and Adrian were well-written, and the reader can really relate to them and understand their choices.

Ivy is on the hunt to find her missing sister and ends up discovering that all the visions she’s seen her entire life are not only real, but put her and her loved ones in danger.

Adrian is as mysterious as he is stubborn, and I wanted to shout at the book every time he refused to give Ivy any information. As frustrating as that was while reading, getting the information in the smaller tidbits was much more interesting and the ending was satisfactory for the first of three.

The chemistry between Adrian and Ivy is sizzling and gets you rooting for them right from the first meeting. Fans of the the Night Huntress series will love this book as this world is just as intriguing as the others, but if you’re expecting the kind of steamy scenes you get with Cat and Bones, you will be disappointed.  Anyone looking for a  angels and demons, good vs. evil story with well rounded characters, a good story and a great budding romance should pick up this book.

I really enjoyed the introduction to this story and very much look forward to the next installment! My ranking of The Beautiful Ashes: four out of five stars!
